Physiognomy and Art

Man has always been a riddle to himself, and through his history of thousands of years he has striven to look into the secrets of his inner life and of his fate. The teachings of physiognomy are the consequence of this eternal striving of man to know both himself and those around him, so that he may find his bearings rightly, foresee what is coming, and live successfully in this world. At the same time he has expressed his beliefs, his views, his emotions, and his dreams in the visual arts, giving them visible form in various conceptions of himself. What man has come to know of his own mental and physical nature he has expressed outwardly through images, fixed in various artifacts and in the works of art that have come down to us.
