Labels. The stupidest thing in the world, and yet the wretched little things seem stuck to the forehead of every one of us. Well, besides being stupid, it turns out they lie to us quite often. If they were true, I would have been safely empty-headed, just as people expected me to be, and Valeri would have remained the rather dull programmer I expected him to be. A bigger delusion than that — I'll say! That man was like hypothermia: I froze with cold around him, until the scorching heat arrived. Then I would call my nerves of steel to the rescue, or swallow a valerian, but my character had no defeatist chromosomes in it. I savored every second of the war between us, although secretly I feared that this last stop might turn out to be a new beginning for which I was not yet ready.
